For Halloween, I want my fellow teachers to dress like medical professionals and put a sign on our backs reading, “Staff” Infection. I don’t know why they just look at me like I have a third eye. I think it is funny.
Every since I was in college in the 70’s, I have been the Halloween costume “Go to” person. Sure, people are posting ideas on the internet, but yeah, most of them have come from me….’Tis true.
In college, a friend of mine wanted to go to a Halloween party at a bar, but you had to dress to go. He wanted to look good and wasn’t into wearing a mask. You know you make the face behind the mask, right? You know you do. Anywho, I told him to wear a suit, and put a tape measure around his neck and one of those tomato pincushions on his wrist and go as Elizabeth’s Tailor. I know, creative, right? He got in not really wearing a costume.
Ok, how about if you want to wear a costume, but your spouse/significant other does not. Well, dress as an old man and put a big C on the other one’s chest and go as Old Man and the C.
One year at school I just wore a tiara and a B on my chest and went as The Queen B
Two years ago I wore a white sweatshirt, put on some bunny ears and tail and put one of those plastic dusters around my neck and went as a dust bunny. Last Halloween, I just wasn’t feeling it, so I just got a huge cardboard quarter and put in on my back and went as a Quarterback
If you don’t have much time to make an outfit, cut out pieces of a map and hot glue it to a cap and go as a Head Trip
If you want to look pretty, wear a gown and a tiara, get a box and a rope and go as a Drag Queen
I wanted my daughter to wear a tacky gold outfit, everything gold, and spray paint a kid’s plastic shovel and go as a Gold Digger
Get a witch hat, a lab coat and stethescope and go as a Witch Doctor or a couple could dress like doctors and have a sign on their backs Which Doctor
I dressed my kids as bees and put the letters on their backs 2 Bee or Not 2 Bee
Black Eyed Peas- Blacken your eyes and wear the letter P all over your shirt.
Don’t really want to dress up? Cut out little clock faces and tape them on your hands..Too Much Time on Your Hands
Illegal Alien-My daughter dressed like this when she was younger and was pissed because only the teachers understood what she was. Jailers outfit, green face with alien antennae.
For a guy, Make a cardboard window, with saran wrap as the window pane (or nothing at all), write Tom on the window and he can go as a Peeping Tom
This is too old for many, but I had a friend name Judy in college and I gave her the idea to wear a Christmas garland wrapped around her neck like a boa and she went as Judy Garland. I guess your name wouldn’t have to be Judy. Just put the name Judy, on our chest and the garland.
For a guy who doesn’t want to dress up, just carry an umbrella and go as Rain Man, you know, like the movie, (I just made that one up..’Tis true…)
A group could carry plastic hatchets and knives and put B’s on their chests and go as Killer B’s
Dress like any kind of animal and wear a party hat with it and go as a Party Animal
Couple-Guy could be a Knight, girl could go as the sun- Knight and Day
I guess I could keep writing for a while. Coming up with a Halloween costume is fun and a little creativity goes a long way.

I need an idea for a costume to wear to work tomorrow, can you tell I’m a procrastinator? I have an awesome fox fir coat (short length, mostly white with a little grey) that I’m going to wear after hours for a less-work-appropriate costume. But I’m wondering if there’s a funny way to incorporate the fir coat into a work-appropriate costume? I definitely want to go more funny than sexy…any ideas??

New ideas that I didn’t see posted:
– Mail order bride. Wear a wedding dress, and plaster priority mail, postage meter tapes, etc to it.
– Bag of marbles. Get a GIANT clear garbage bag, make arm & leg holes, and tie top around your neck. Fill bag with balloons. (I put smaller color balloons inside larger clear balloons, so the marbles looked like cat’s eye marbles.)
Question: I saw a couple references to an Elizabeth Tailor costume, but didn’t see the details. Can you repost what that one is?

I still like “staff infection” or you could each wear a tiara and each wear a sash saying Miss Behavior, Miss Informed, Miss Calculated, etc.
Running off in all directions..each wear running clothes and directional signs on each of your chests..

You could go as Prince’s Purple Rain…(purple Reign) Wear all purple and wear crowns, a cape and carry sceptors.
Unchained Melody- Wear black turtlenecks with white musical notes on each of your chests…each of you wear a chain around your neck.
Dress like sheep- Just the Way You Ewe Are
abracadabra- Steve Miller Band…dress like a magician and his helper.
If you really don’t want to dress up, put Billy on his chest and Jean on yours and go as Michael Jackson’s Billy Jean..

That is eerie! Imagine you knowing another woman named Cristy Carrington who also claims to be the Queen of Puns. Freaky. Now I’m wondering if I’ve been the victim of identity theft. Come to think of it, I haven’t seen my Queen of Puntification tiara in quite awhile.Hmmmm.

Last year a group of is went to a medical school halloween costume party we wore all green scrubs, and accessorized with gangsta style (used aluminum foil to make “grillz” for our teeth and “bling” jewelry… turned our hats sideways, etc) and called ourselves “GANG GREEN” – it was a big hit!

FANTASTIC IDEAS! My favorite costume I made was an egg costume out of felt and then wore a devil’s horns, tail, and cape = Deviled egg.
Another year I wore the black and white prison uniform, made a bird mask, feather gloves and bird feet to be a jail bird.
And last year I dressed up like a cat and then put the word COPY in white letters all over me = copy cat.

I’m an aid in a 4 yr old preschool class at a local daycare. All the teachers and kids come to school dressed up for Halloween. I wanna do something simple and easy on my wallet but also something the kids can figure out. I’ve read your ideas and they are brilliant. 🙂

One year, I wrapped a large box with Christmas paper and a bow, with holes cut out for a head and arms, and my son wore that OVER his ghost costume. He was the “Ghost of Christmas Present”… get it? Last year, I made him a toast costume… under it he wore a striped shirt, a beret on his head and a moustache.. he was “French Toast”- people loved it!

I have a group of 6+ 30-yr olds running a 52 mile relay race… we live in Maui:) Last year we were Jane Fonda and Richard Simmons, the winning theme was “Streakers”… all dressed in nude with body parts attached to their garments… something with a cute pun on words??? i am completely drawing a blank… you are so creative with your costume ideas i thought i would see if you could come up with anything:)

Oh, this will be fun to think of. I am still trying to get my staff and school to dress like doctors in scrubs and do “Staff infection.” Let me think…running.. You can do the quote from Forrest Gump, “Run, Forrest, Run” and dress with nature stuff on yourself…like a forest….maybe one of you could have a fake owl or squirrel on your shoulder or something.

Well, I went as a kinda California Roll and I dressed all in black and then sewed a bunch of old shirts together
black for seaweed
white for rice
pink and white tie dyed for salmon
green for avocado
beige for crab
yellow for eggroll
I didnt have time to make a back and front though so I had to hold it up (plus, I had to put it down during classes because I couldn’t write with that on) but I could have used black suspenders and stuck it on there 🙂

LOL..That’s a good one. Yes, if you are near a Walmart or any craft store, they sell those little white boxes that look like the Chinese take out. Carry one like a purse and print on it, “Take out”…cute idea 🙂

Just any kind of ball. I was thinking of the bouncy balls that kids play kickball with. You would just carry it, I guess. Which could suck. I guess you could tie it to yourself somehow. How about going as a fur ball? You could wear the fur coat and carry a bouncy ball. “fur ball” I can’t think of anything with the east indian style dress. The only thing I can think of is carrying a “sun” and going as “Indian summer”

I used to make my son’s costumes – not for Halloween because in that time, we didn’t celebrate it in my country but I did for Carnival.
I also always enjoyed to make his costumes. However, I also was extremely happy to see costumes in stores: they brought me inspiration as well as once saved me in my last minute shopping as I didn’t have time to make a costume myself and my son wanted to participate into the costume contest at school.
Well, needless to say he didn’t win the contest, but at least he got a lot of pleasure 😉

That’s so true. It is sometimes hard to come up with stuff around the house for the last minute costuming. It’s pretty nice to be able to go to a store and buy an outfit. I saw a lot at Walmart this year, especially accessories. Thanks for writing.

Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed!
I recently got a costume, a ‘Scottish Lass’ outfit that looks more wenchesque than anything else. After I bought it, I saw a group of girls buying the same costume and I’m a bit stumped at how to customize it.
Do you have any ideas on how to make a popular costume unique? I totally get the ‘witch doctor’ idea – but, like, a wench or regular “adult” costume? The person I’m going to the Halloween party with is going as the Pope, if that’s any inspiration for ideas?

This reminded me of a few others my friends and I have gone as. My husband and I both wore grey sweats and I made a hexagon hat for him and a hexagon tutu for me out of cardboard and spray painted them silver. We were “Nut and Bolt.”
One of my friends went as “static electricity” She taped some socks and a few used dryer sheets to some sweats and teased her hair.
Another couple wore some walmart bags, they were “Walmart Trash.”

I have decided to get velcro strips and put playing cards all over a sweatshirt except for 1 card, and go as “1 card short of a full deck”..My co-workers think I’m nuts most of the time,lol..so might as go as something crazy.lol
Someone who replied here had a great idea. You wear camouflage from the waist up, and he wears camouflage from the waist down and go as Upper G-I and Lower G-I..lol
or just get a stuffed bunny and tie it on your head and go as “hare-brained”…wear a tiara and put a bunch of hearts all over your shirt and go as the Queen of Hearts..he could wear a crown and carry a golf club and go as the King of clubs..

Thanks! LOL..5″ tall, eh? Ok, let’s see? When my daughter was in college she went as a bank robber. She wore very short shorts, black hose and spikey heels, white top with black stripes, little black toboggan hat and carried a black bag tied together and put a big $ sign on it.
She also went as a very cute Mother Nature..she bought brown material and just draped it around and tied it at the waist with a vine..and bought fake plant parts and leaves at Walmart and put them on her costume..high heels..

Two years ago a guy wore a suit and had a sign that said “I’m sorry” around his neck. I asked and he was a Formal Apology. Haahaa. Thought it would go good with these ideas. 😀

Yes, you are the queen of Halloween costumer ideas. I’m always the dork who can’t think of the clever ones that don’t require lot’s of gear and shows up at parties admiring others cleverness. This year I’ll be in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii where Halloween is a big street festival. I’d love any ideas for a cute and clever costume that stands up to heat. Or something simple to go with a nickname I have of wildcard – that doesn’t require a huge card outfit?

I really am..lol..Thanks for writing! Let’s see. If you are going to be at a street festival, you don’t want to lug around anything, hmmmmm, How about wearing a tiara and have a bunch of hearts all over you and go as the Queen of Hearts?
You can put one piece of poster board on front and back and carry a regular phone and be a calling card.
…One card short of a full deck..
hot clue a bunch of cards on your back and have a sign that says the cards are stacked against you.
….have a card up your sleeve..
lol..glue cards to your chest and say “Keep my cards close to my chest”
Ok, something else..lol
Tease your hair up or look wild somehow and carry a stuffed animal pig and “Go Hog Wild”
Wear tennis shoes, athletic gear and carry a goose…”on a wild goose chase”
Be a seamstress and have pieces of wheat all over you and “Sew wild oats”
Hope some of these help. I’m having a great time thinking these up..lol

I wore a slip with Freud on it – Freudian slip
I wore cardboard around the waist with an alarm clock & condoms glued to it with a lamp shade my head & was a one night stand
My hubby wore a white tee with fluffy chicks glued to it – chick magnet

Thing is, I really want to be a pirate this year (I’m a girl, so female obviously lol) but I want to put a spin on it. I already have my basic pirate costume ready to go but I was hoping that you had a few twists I can put on that. I have a huge Halloween party every year and people come up with some good ones. A guy showed up with blue yarn strung all over him and he was “tangled up in blue”. Another girl wore a lamp shade on her head and cut a box to fit her body and was a table lamp. One strapped on some giant boobs and slit my neck and was “the first girl to die in every horror movie”. I loooooooooooooove Halloween! Thanks for the great ideas.

My husband (also a teacher) wore a Darth Vader mask and and a white apron and went as Darth Waiter. Last year, I told him to wear his old graduation gown and tape eyeballs to it and simply say…”all eyes on me” he didn’t do it. Maybe this year. We love the punny costumes. You and my husband think along the same lines……scary that I know ANOTHER being with this thinking process…………..
But it’s refreshing to see costume ideas other than what’s in the stores. I’ve always felt that costumes should be made from things around the house, with little or no sewing required. I’ve always MADE my kids costumes when possible. Rarely did I buy the whole costume, maybe just accessories.
You’re ideas are hysterical! And easy to do! You should submit your ideas to like Good Housekeeping or Better Homes and Gardens.

Well, hmmm…wow…um……cat on a hot tin roof? oh i know..the “cat’s pajama’s”..or you could put a sign on it that says 5/9 or On my seventh life, take it easy on me
If you are hanging out with your cat, put fake blood around your mouth and wear a sign that says,
“Cat’s got my tongue” (I just made these up..I’m on a roll..lol)
somehow put a bag around the cat somehow (which may be cruel..lol..”Cat’s out of the bag”
I got it! lol..You dress disheveled and wear a sign that says, “Look What the Cat Dragged in” (or drug in..stupid semantics..lol)
Hope that helps..can’t think of anything for an orange cat though..

Hey, Jumping in the Puddles: Could you help me? My husband is coming with me and my baby to a Halloween party, and he’s not feeling too enthusiastic this year. My baby is going as a bumblebee and I’m going to be an orange flowerpot with yellow mums sticking out of my head.
Neither of us like the idea of my husband going as a butterfly. The only idea I’ve got is trying to make a beekeeper hat/veil for him. He wants something cheap and easy because we’re only dressing up for one night and we’ll both be handling a baby. Any ideas?

Wow..that’s a tough one. Instead of a butterfly, couldn’t he go as a pot head?
That way, your bumblebee baby can fly to the mums and then catch a buzz at dad’s….get it..buzz..lol
He could somehow go as a bag of potting soil with a sign “I’ve got the dirt on you.”
Oh…if he wants something easy…paint his thumbs green and that’s all he has to do..”I’ve got a green thumb.”
I’ve got it!!!! -He could just carry a book and put a sign on him that says, “Just let nature take its course”
(Dear God, I am truly a creative genius…lol)
Or…this is a good one…buy 3 or 4 chunky necklace chains and have the letter B on each one..he can tell people
he is the B-Keeper..
He could be a worm somehow..Will E. Worm

You could do so many things…Top Dog, Ringleader, Big Wig, Wizard, Chair person (carry a chair), pulling strings, crack the whip, the big cheese,
be in the driver’s seat..etc. etc. I think the best one for you is to be the Queen B. Wear a tiara and the letter B.

I had a friend who wore a blue jumpsuit with cotton balls taped to himself to look like clouds and a squirt gun in his hand. When people asked what he was he would say “I’m partly cloudy…with a chance of rain” and then squirt them. I still laugh when I think of that Halloween party. I also had a friend who dressed in all blue and tied a chicken around his neck with a phone cord and went as “Chicken Cordon Bleu”!

Partly cloudy with a chance of rain..lol..I Love that one! Wow, I just looked at your web site. How awesome to be able to travel like that! My son and daughter 25, 23, love to travel. My daughter Alex studied in Mexico (Guanajuato for 5 months) Loves that country. She just got done teaching English in Japan for a year and is now in France doing the same..Enough about my kids, though..lol..Travel themes, eh? Globe-trotter, dress like Spock and be a trekker, dress like a woman and say you “go-abroad”, or my idea of gluing atlas pieces to your hat and be a head trip…put a sign on you that says Friday, Saturday, Sunday and dress like a warrior of some kind and go as a weekend warrior…hit the road (hammer,?), Marco and Polo, etc.

So many great ideas!
I was “Badly Dressed” one year. I wore mismatched shoes, socks, clothes, and earrings. I think I added a feather boa as well. Another time, I was “Static Cling” and pinned socks and other clothing to a grey outfit

Love these! I, too, like to do easy, cheap, play-on-word costumes. My all-time favorite is the Blind Date… dark sunglasses, a cane (bought a dowel at the craft store & colored the end red), and a name tag that said “Hi, my name is: October 31st” – it was a huge hit!

Thank you! I think the easiest one to do is to put a sign on your back that says “Pat”, and go as a Pat on the back…I love the Blind Date idea, especially the name tag. I wrote a blog called Three Blind Drunk Mice, about dressing up like the 2 blind mice.

Guy with a tree branch taped to his shirt, with condoms stapled to it… Rubber Tree.
Woman in all black with a black cape, who’d ask, “What do YOU think I am?”… Inkblot.
Couple in evening dress and climbing harnesses… Social Climbers.
Girl in a flapper dress and long pearls, who’d answer when you asked what she was, “I’m a dolla cheapa than I was yestaday!”
Girl who spent a Halloween party jumping in front of people and saying, “I’m in your way!”

I saw one in a magazine. Dress in all pink, with a pink bandanna and a shoe duct-taped to it. The gum on the bottom of a shoe. I want to be a zombie jellyfish victim, which I’m going to have so much fun with. I like the illegal alien one, I’m going to pass that on to my old Ethnic Studies professor from college. Awesome Ideas though!

Haha–these are great! I’ve since given up on elaborate Halloween costumes which I made myself, but now I’ve gotten simpler and only plop a witch hat on my head. I have a friend who was once the Cookie Monster–she simply wore a blue sweatshirt that had the Cookie Monster’s face on it.
These are some great quickie costume ideas, and your two children look so cute as bees! Maybe I’ll try one of your suggestions this year. Thanks for sharing! And congrats on getting Freshly Pressed!

One year my wife and I dressed as farmers, pulled our pants down about halfway in the rear, wore Billy Bob teeth, and went as a “crack dealer” and a “crack hoe.” Yeah, she carried a hoe around, too. Nobody got it; I thought it was brilliant.

Thanks for the ideas… I have had some good ones in the past, but was stuck for this year. My creative juices are now flowing!
One year, I had been sick the week leading up to Halloween, so I pinned sewing gadgets (spools of thread, tape measures, etc) to my clothes and had a sign telling people to ask how I felt. Sew-Sew, I would say.
Another year, my partner wore camouflage pants and I wore a camo jacket, and we had signs that said “Upper GI” and “Lower GI”. (I thought this one was particularly funny!)

I’m always a little sad to see all the Halloween costumes in stores. When my kids were growing up, I always made their costumes, and I’m not talking about sewing. I used to race around the house, grabbing items at random and creating really fun get ups. One year, I dressed my daughter as Little Bo Peep, then turned her coat inside out to get at the wooly-like lining, put it on my younger son, and he became her sheep. They won a prize for that one. Another year, I put Milk Bone dog biscuits in my daughter’s hair and she went as Bam Bam. She won a prize for that. Thanks for reminding me of those great memories.

last year I was “Miss Diagnosed”. I wore a hot pink prom dress, wore a crown and sash with the name, sceptre, and a boquet of roses. I had giant sloppy tears rolling down my face, destroying my make up and posed for many, many pictures with adoring fans as I pretended to cry my eyes out.
It was a surprise hit!

I used to have pet wild turkeys that I always fed. I named them Eeeny Meeny Miney Moe, Larry and Curly..I think it there are 6 people who want to dress up together, this is a good one, maybe..I don’t know..just thought of it as a costume..lol
